MergeLane Demo Day
Limited Capacity seats available

Boulder Startup Week is starting early this year with a special "pre" BSW event in partnership with the third annual MergeLane Demo Day, May 4th, 10am at the Boulder Theater.

If you’ve been to a MergeLane Demo Day, you know it’s a whole different kind of startup event. If you haven’t, last year featured not only pitches from our dynamic, talented cohort of startups, all with at least one woman in leadership. We also had a sweet drumline, a killer ballet-meets-Aerosmith dance homage to our sponsors and a wonderful display of leadership from the kids joining us for “Take your Daughter (or Son) to Demo Day.”

It’s going to be another great celebration of leadership and innovation this year, and we want you to be there with us.

We look forward again to packing the Boulder Theater for an inspiring event on May 4th at 10am. We welcome you, your “other”, friends and associates who will love this as much as you will, and your kids above six years old.

Visit with founders, mentors, and investors from Boulder and around the nation who have chosen, like you, to support MergeLane's mission and to #changetheratio.

This event will sell out, so please reserve your tickets today.

Don’t wait, register for Demo Day now.

Diversity Is The Answer: After The Accelerator
Limited Capacity filling up

The data is in: diversity provides a strategic business advantage. As companies leave accelerators, they often experience a let-down. No more are they surrounded by mentors, investors, and peers who are driving towards short-term goals. By putting themselves in environments full of people of diverse backgrounds, they can gain the long-term perspective needed to build a company over longer cycles. We explore how diverse professional communities support the ongoing development of business, and how to cultivate advisors, friends, colleagues and staff from broad backgrounds to help support your company's adolescence.

Finding Money Beyond The VC
Limited Capacity filling up

It is HARD for non-social/consumer startups to find money, especially early.  For enterprise startups, ideal investors are quite often not angels or VCs but corporate and/or government partners who can provide both financing and critical customer engagements.  With larger companies moving heavily into the startup world, the ability to find and gain these partnerships has never been better.  But these are not free rides and quite often the motivations and criteria that these alternative sources use are very different from more traditional investors.  Join us to hear from some of the most exciting alternative funds in the area and learn what they are looking for and how they can help your company in more ways than you might realize!

Your TV Isn’t Just Listening, It’s Talking Too
Limited Capacity seats available

The Internet of Things (IoT) is helping consumers make their lives easier, but it’s also opening consumers to more security risks, and the general internet as a whole to attacks at scale that were previously unachievable. Let’s face it, in the real world we have found that data privacy in the U.S. is given quite freely when compared to the rest of the world. When looking at individual items independently in our homes, we are not always concerned about someone controlling our dishwasher, turning up our heat or dimming our lights. At least not concerned enough to pay a premium over other, less costly alternative. However, looking at devices in your home as an attacker will undoubtedly do, insecure devices on your network are ultimately a pivot point for attackers. A pivot point that an attacker can own with very little risk of exposure, giving them full access to parts of you home or office network that matter significantly to consumers.

This panel will discuss the effect of IoT security, not just in terms of how it affects individual households with devices, but what access to existing networks means for manufacturers and households.

Jenna Bee

Jenna used to be a very serious young adult on the East Coast. In 2009, she moved to Colorado where she found yoga, and rediscovered her more playful side. It had been a long time since I had tried to stand on her head, or do anything else that she wasn’t good at, and she found it liberating to turn upside down and fall on her face every once in a while. Jenna sees yoga as a powerful metaphor and tool for living a remarkable life that is FUN, adventurous, and meaningful. She completed her first trainings at CorePower in Boulder, back in 2011 and 2012, and more recently completed 300 hours of advanced study with Gina Caputo at the Colorado School of Yoga. | | As her practice evolves, Jenna becomes increasingly passionate about building community among yogis and local businesses. She also loves to introduce yoga to people who may not have discovered their practice yet. These inclinations brought about the founding of All Terrain Yoga, which aims to make yoga accessible, relatable, and REAL for all kinds of student by offering classes outside of traditional spaces. Whether practicing one-on-one or in groups, Jenna pays special attention to each student, empowering them in their unique and individual practice. Hack the Dot with Name.com
Limited Capacity seats available

It's Boulder Startup Week and we're bringing back our noteworthy Hack the Dot. A Hack the Dot is a two-hour hackathon where coding school students, junior developers, experienced developers, marketers, designers and curious web people come together to build ideas around a domain name. Our events are meant to be a quick and fun way to build a humorous (and functional) product quickly while meeting people in your tech/startup community.

There will be pizza. And probably beer.

What to Bring / How to Prepare:

• Bring your laptop (fully charged). Bring your charger just in case.

Optional:

• Install the Atom text editor. Go here: https://atom.io/

• Setup a github.com account

How does it work?

Step 1: Attendees are broken up into random teams.

Step 2: The teams are provided with the same undisclosed domain name by Name.com, arbitrary and often hilarious.

Step 3: Teams have just two hours to come up with a functioning site inspired by that domain. The team builds the most creative and fun idea for the domain wins.

Participants will be judged on four criteria: (1) functionality, (2) design, (3) humor, and (4) creative domain name interpretation.

What do you get at the event?

FOOD!
SWAG!
FRIENDS!

How much does it cost?

It’s FREE!

Questions? Send them to HacktheDot@name.com.

Limited Capacity filling up

You will need register separately from BSW and purchase a ticket for this event, visit https://www.daybreaker.com/event/superheroes-social-impact/

At Daybreaker, we dance our faces off before work and feel gloriously healthy while doing so. We gather in community to participate in something greater than ourselves. Daybreaker is about choosing to live life differently, choosing to be happy, and choosing to pursue the best versions of ourselves.

Join us for a special BSW version at the Impact Hub to see what Daybreaker surprises are in store. We start with a one hour yoga + fitness experience and then dance with reckless abandon for two hours! Superhero costumes are strongly encouraged.

We don’t need alcohol. We don’t need to pretend to be someone else. We come as we are to sweat, dance and connect with ourselves and each other.

We will be donating a portion of the proceeds to Impact Hub's Academy where they bring the local community together to learn, evolve, collaborate, and take action on today’s biggest challenges. This is where change goes to work. https://impacthubacademy.org

How a coworking space helped 300 kids learn JavaScript
Limited Capacity seats available

Through our 501(c)(3) foundation, we have introduced over 300 local public school kids to JavaScript app development.

In partnership with the CodeBeetle School of Technology and Boomtown startup Bitsbox, the program was specifically designed by educators to mesh with current school curriculum to reinforce critical thinking and problem-solving in addition to teaching soft skills that are so critical to success in the workplace.

This is addressing a deficiency in computer science curriculum in schools, is a great way to give back to the community, and the exposure has driven membership for our coworking space, EVO3 Workspace.

The Wage Gap: A Productive Discussion on Solutions
Women are still making 80 cents on the dollar. The gap is even wider for African American women (63 cents) and hispanic women (54 cents). We can do better.

We welcome all genders to join this positive and productive conversation on closing the gap. We'll start with four lightning-talks from a variety of perspectives (two women in the trenches, one woman and one man in leadership). They'll each share a solution they've found in their own lives, from salary negotiation to company structure. Then we'll open the floor to questions and discussion.

You'll leave with actionable and realistic ideas on closing the pay gap for both yourself and others!

Whether you are new to AdTech or an old hand, the amounts of unnecessary jargon, useless acronyms, and complicated behind the scenes stuff can seem impossible to understand. It’s a maddeningly pervasive system, one which affects all of us. Did you know that more trades are done over programmatic systems every day than the NYSE does in a year? IN. A. F$%&ING. YEAR. The system is colossal, but it’s not too complex to understand, we promise. You’ll walk away ready to wield Programmatic as any knight could wield  knows his sword.

So you want to be an Angel Investor
Limited Capacity seats available

Angel investors are individuals who invest in entrepreneurial firms. Unlike venture capitalists who invest “other people’s money”, angel investors invest their own money, typically in amounts ranging from $10,000 to $250,000. Although it has been around for decades, angel investing as a source of funding for entrepreneurial startups has gained more prominence in recent years. This session will attempt to de-mystify the process of angel investing for aspiring and novice angel investors. It will explain the major steps and financial terms associated with funding a startup company in user-friendly terms and provide a real-world case that illustrates the challenges and opportunities faced by angel investors. As we seek to drive diversity in entrepreneurship, one way to do that is to bring more underrepresented groups to the funding side.  Women and minorities are especially encouraged to attend!

Catalyzing Feminine Leadership
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Many venture firms are finding that their highest returns come from their female-founded startups - some reporting up to 63% better than all-male teams. Find out why women leaders are well poised to make waves in entrepreneurship and how women leaders could radically change the way we launch and run businesses in today’s modern world. In this session, we will explore practices and perspectives that create a new paradigm for leadership, one that leverages the incredible power of feminine values such as empathy, connection, intuition, embodiment, and heart. Working with a balanced approach to leadership, where the feminine is as highly expressed as our masculine helps us to feel powerful and energized, and at the same time create healthy team environments based on authentic connection. In this age of connectivity and network-based business models, this new paradigm will be what gives any business a competitive edge. Join us for this timely session and be prepared to connect with other women through Emerging Women’s interactive Power Circle experience.

dLab: Unpacking Lessons from a Day-Long, Design Thinking Diversity "Lab" w/ 9 Startups

We believe that creativity and empathy are our greatest tools when tackling big, complex problems. That's why in April EchoUser and SHYFTco hosted a joint Diversity Lab (dLab) & day-long design sprint to "hack" diversity in tech with 9 startups (Sparkfun, Brandzooka, Turing Center, Full Contact, Techstars, Tendril, VictorOps, MojoTech and IMM).

WHAT TO EXPECT
In this talk, we'll share the results of our "Diversity Lab & Mastermind" experiment with the Boulder community. We'll dig into and discuss how startups can use design thinking methods to make progress on more than product design but also systems, environments, and ambiguous, sometimes uncomfortable problems--like Culture and Diversity work in their companies.

COMMUNITY IS KEY:
A big part of the Diversity Lab was also about building a community for people who are working to improve diversity & culture in their companies. This BSW event is also about connecting dots and helping YOU to join a stronger network of folks in D&I.

What CXOs Want And What You Need To Know
Limited Capacity filling up

The LEAN startup model is all about rapid iterations...at least in the consumer world.  But how does a startup accomplish customer-drive development with customers from which they might only have one chance to impress?  Enterprises understand the challenges facing new companies but they absolutely require critical components to work with a given startup - and what they need might surprise you.  If you are launching a new startup, are pre-revenue you are struggling to increase enterprise sales, you might be missing something that is important for your success.  Come to this session to hear from your customer - the very people that you want to purchase your offering - and learn what you need, and do not need, in order to succeed.

GRIT & GRACE: Surviving & Thriving in Your Startup

We aren’t going to sugar-coat this. Being an entrepreneur and part of a startup is a roller coaster ride with exhilarating highs and breath-taking (*occasionally terrifying) lows. It definitely isn’t for the feint of heart.

One word keeps coming up: GRIT. You have to have it to survive. You’re going to hear a lot of no’s and hit a healthy share of roadblocks that test your creativity and resolve. That’s a given. It also prompts the question: “Does this startup life have to be SO hard?“ Where can we also find GRACE? Along with grit, thriving comes down to living in the flow, sidestepping the low-lows, finding balance where we can, and channeling our strengths to increase the odds of success.

We are bringing together 6 powerhouse entrepreneurs from across the spectrum of startup-land to share their truth as they know it about entrepreneurship + grit + grace.

6 MINUTE SPOTLIGHT:

What’s My “Why”?: Find the Answer, Build a More Resonant Brand

Often, startups get off the ground with technology or a product that solves a problem, which answers the "HOW" portion of why they exist.

But for a startup brand, that answer is just a piece of the puzzle.

Are you a startup with a “HOW,” but not yet a “WHY”? Why exactly are you the right business to solve this problem? Why should investors and employees and customers choose you? Are you building an actionable brand story or simply hanging out a shingle with your logo attached?

Join some of best brand-builders in Boulder as they:

  • Define what we mean by “finding your WHY”

  • Diagnose what’s missing in your current brand of “how” and the critical elements to watch out for

  • Demonstrate the business impact of finding your WHY with real world case studies

  • Deliver actionable takeaways and processes to uncover your “WHY” as soon as you leave

ChatOps: Infrastructure as Conversation
Limited Capacity seats available

Those tasked with building and maintaining resilient services and systems at scale are aware of the concepts behind “Infrastructure as Code”. Configuration management tools and services such as Puppet, Ansible, Chef, and others have become a staple in the provisioning, management, and more of critical components of systems worldwide.

With the growing popularity of ChatOps (the concept of moving actions and context related to Operations into a persistent group-chat tool) more and more teams are beginning to find even more efficiencies and benefits. What does it look like when teams have begun to manage much of their infrastructure from the interface of group-chat? How can ChatOps help scale not only the infrastructure and software that we are building but the business as it grows. This talk will point out the often misunderstood challenges of complex systems, scaling companies, and how ChatOps is solving these very problems.

AI Automation, Jobs, and the Economy
Artificial intelligence is undergoing a renaissance, with the number of relevant research papers, startups, applications, and new ideas expanding rapidly.  These new capabilities will enable people and result in greater aggregate productivity, analogous to the invention of the steam engine that powered the industrial revolution.  At the same time many laborers, drivers, assembly line workers, and even some more skilled roles in society will be made redundant.  This shift will have both positive and negative consequences for individuals' lives, society, and the economy, which is why it is important to start understanding the trends and preparing now.

Join Jeff Rose, CEO of Boulder AI company ThinkTopic, to discuss the technology, economic and political landscape of our automated future.

The Culture Camp Creates

What does it look like to create a culture that’s authentically values-led?

CampMinder was born from the values its team members learned at summer camp: things like Put Team First, Get It Done, Find A Better Way, Be Admirable, and Give Joy. Now CampMinder team members serve the industry that taught them these values by living these values.

In this session, you’ll hear from CampMinder’s Founder and CEO, Dan Konigsberg, about how this bootstrapped SaaS company – led by its values – blends heart, wisdom, and technology to help camps succeed. CampMinder’s Director of Talent & Culture, Analiese Brown, will share additional insights and ideas for incorporating a values-led approach to talent management.

Whether you’re a job-seeker who’s curious about working for an authentically values-led company or a founder interested in building a strong company culture, you’ll find inspiration in the story of CampMinder, a culture inspired by its summer camp roots.

Enterprise Insights From Leading Angels & VCs
Enterprise startups are very different from consumer/social-oriented startups.  It might take months or years to land a small handful of customers but the revenue potential is massive.  With more money than ever sitting in corporate hands, a new era of enterprise innovation is underway and yet the ability to properly assess potential is still very hard to understand.  Join our session to learn from leading VCs and Angels how you should assess the value of a startup, accurately determine risk and determine good from bad projects.  For entrepreneurs, this is a change to see how investors think about enterprise startups and, for would-be investors, this is a chance to start breaking through into an exciting, and rapidly growing, area of the startup world.

5 Things Every Artist (and All Entrepreneurs) Should Know About The Law
Whether it's the rounded corners of a smartphone, the color of a pill, or the marketing materials supporting such products, everything in today’s economy must appeal to consumers’ senses, which means that artistic content is playing an ever larger role in business. Unfortunately, many businesses are still operating on the original, outdated and dangerous file-sharing model, which assumes that everything on the Internet is free game, or the “I-hired-you-to-do-this-for-me” model, which assumes that the work of an independent contractor belongs to the hiring company.

If these scenarios sound familiar, this presentation is for you. Both artists and entrepreneurs will learn 5 tips for working within the law to add value to their businesses while avoiding distracting pitfalls. We’ll discuss the benefits of forming a business entity, how ownership of creative works is determined, types of intellectual property protection (trademarks, design patents, copyrights), online/digital rights, best practices for ensuring compliance with licensing terms, and how to address infringement.

We’ve packed a lot of information in this presentation, so drink a little extra caffeine and come with questions.

Shift The Game: How Bringing Consciousness to Technology and Business will Power the Revolution
Every fear, trigger and limiting belief comes up when you're an entrepreneur. The companies that win know that mindset is represented in every business decision they make. What we offer, how we monetize, who we hire, the clients and partners we serve and most importantly, our bottom line are all direct reflections of our beliefs.

So, how many of us actually know what's driving us? And, how many of us are deliberately creating what we want to experience?

You are the entrepreneurs that are imagining our tomorrows and your technologies will provide the most speed, scale and wealth creation. Your self knowledge and mastery of mindset is critical because those that leverage the power of tech and money while leading from love will change the world.

When we put the resources in the hands of the people who will consciously lead, that's when we will change the way business works - from the inside.

This interactive workshop will make you a player that's Shifting The Game.

You will:
See why you do what you do
Identify and drop your defenses
Re-pattern your limiting beliefs
Learn how to lead a revolution and win
