MergeLane Demo Day
Boulder Startup Week is starting early this year with a special "pre" BSW event in partnership with the third annual MergeLane Demo Day, May 4th, 10am at the Boulder Theater.

If you’ve been to a MergeLane Demo Day, you know it’s a whole different kind of startup event. If you haven’t, last year featured not only pitches from our dynamic, talented cohort of startups, all with at least one woman in leadership. We also had a sweet drumline, a killer ballet-meets-Aerosmith dance homage to our sponsors and a wonderful display of leadership from the kids joining us for “Take your Daughter (or Son) to Demo Day.”

It’s going to be another great celebration of leadership and innovation this year, and we want you to be there with us.

We look forward again to packing the Boulder Theater for an inspiring event on May 4th at 10am. We welcome you, your “other”, friends and associates who will love this as much as you will, and your kids above six years old.

Visit with founders, mentors, and investors from Boulder and around the nation who have chosen, like you, to support MergeLane's mission and to #changetheratio.

This event will sell out, so please reserve your tickets today.

Don’t wait, register for Demo Day now.

Diversity Is The Answer: After The Accelerator
Limited Capacity seats available

The data is in: diversity provides a strategic business advantage. As companies leave accelerators, they often experience a let-down. No more are they surrounded by mentors, investors, and peers who are driving towards short-term goals. By putting themselves in environments full of people of diverse backgrounds, they can gain the long-term perspective needed to build a company over longer cycles. We explore how diverse professional communities support the ongoing development of business, and how to cultivate advisors, friends, colleagues and staff from broad backgrounds to help support your company's adolescence.

Finding Money Beyond The VC
Limited Capacity seats available

It is HARD for non-social/consumer startups to find money, especially early.  For enterprise startups, ideal investors are quite often not angels or VCs but corporate and/or government partners who can provide both financing and critical customer engagements.  With larger companies moving heavily into the startup world, the ability to find and gain these partnerships has never been better.  But these are not free rides and quite often the motivations and criteria that these alternative sources use are very different from more traditional investors.  Join us to hear from some of the most exciting alternative funds in the area and learn what they are looking for and how they can help your company in more ways than you might realize!

How a coworking space helped 300 kids learn JavaScript
Limited Capacity seats available

Through our 501(c)(3) foundation, we have introduced over 300 local public school kids to JavaScript app development.

This is addressing a deficiency in computer science curriculum in schools, is a great way to give back to the community, and the exposure has driven membership for our coworking space, EVO3 Workspace.

Shesays Boulder GRIT & GRACE: Surviving & Thriving in Your Startup
Limited Capacity seats available

We aren’t going to sugar-coat this. Being an entrepreneur and part of a startup is a roller coaster ride with exhilarating highs and breath-taking (*occasionally terrifying) lows. It definitely isn’t for the feint of heart.

One word keeps coming up: GRIT. You have to have it to survive. You’re going to hear a lot of no’s and hit a healthy share of roadblocks that test your creativity and resolve. That’s a given. It also prompts the question: “Does this startup life have to be SO hard?“ Where can we also find GRACE? Along with grit, thriving comes down to living in the flow, sidestepping the low-lows, finding balance where we can, and channeling our strengths to increase the odds of success.

We are bringing together 6 powerhouse entrepreneurs from across the spectrum of startup-land to share their truth as they know it about entrepreneurship + grit + grace.

6 MINUTE SPOTLIGHT:
They’ll each have 6 minutes to share a their juicy insights and story on what they have learned in the trenches. Join us to hear how they keep pushing, inventing, growing & thriving.

Then we’ll dive into an all-hands panel with our speakers for a hearty, fast-moving Q&A round.

6:45pm: TED-style presentations:

AI Automation, Jobs, and the Economy
Limited Capacity seats available

Artificial intelligence is undergoing a renaissance, with the number of relevant research papers, startups, applications, and new ideas expanding rapidly.  These new capabilities will enable people and result in greater aggregate productivity, analogous to the invention of the steam engine that powered the industrial revolution.  At the same time many laborers, drivers, assembly line workers, and even some more skilled roles in society will be made redundant.  This shift will have both positive and negative consequences for individuals' lives, society, and the economy, which is why it is important to start understanding the trends and preparing now.

Join Jeff Rose, CEO of Boulder AI company ThinkTopic, to discuss the technology, economic and political landscape of our automated future.

Enterprise Insights From Leading Angels & VCs
Limited Capacity seats available

Enterprise startups are very different from consumer/social-oriented startups.  It might take months or years to land a small handful of customers but the revenue potential is massive.  With more money than ever sitting in corporate hands, a new era of enterprise innovation is underway and yet the ability to properly assess potential is still very hard to understand.  Join our session to learn from leading VCs and Angels how you should assess the value of a startup, accurately determine risk and determine good from bad projects.  For entrepreneurs, this is a change to see how investors think about enterprise startups and, for would-be investors, this is a chance to start breaking through into an exciting, and rapidly growing, area of the startup world.

5 Things Every Artist (and All Entrepreneurs) Should Know About The Law
Limited Capacity seats available

Whether it's the rounded corners of a smartphone, the color of a pill, or the marketing materials supporting such products, everything in today’s economy must appeal to consumers’ senses, which means that artistic content is playing an ever larger role in business. Unfortunately, many businesses are still operating on the original, outdated and dangerous file-sharing model, which assumes that everything on the Internet is free game, or the “I-hired-you-to-do-this-for-me” model, which assumes that the work of an independent contractor belongs to the hiring company.

If these scenarios sound familiar, this presentation is for you. Both artists and entrepreneurs will learn 5 tips for working within the law to add value to their businesses while avoid distracting pitfalls. We’ll discuss the benefits of forming a business entity, how ownership of creative works is determined, types of intellectual property protection (trademarks, design patents, copyrights), online/digital rights, best practices for ensuring compliance with licensing terms, and how to address infringement.

We’ve packed a lot of information in this presentation, so drink a little extra caffeine and come with questions.

Shift The Game - How Technology, Business, and Consciousness are powering the Revolution
Limited Capacity filling up

Every fear, trigger and limiting belief comes up when you're an entrepreneur. The companies that win know that mindset is represented in every business decision they make. What we offer, how we monetize, who we hire, the clients and partners we serve and most importantly, our bottom line are all direct reflections of our beliefs.
So, how many of us actually know what's driving us? And, how many of us are deliberately creating what we want to experience?
You are the entrepreneurs that are imagining our tomorrows and your technologies will provide the most speed, scale and wealth creation. Your self knowledge and mastery of mindset is critical because those that leverage the power of tech and money while leading from love will change the world.
When we put the resources in the hands of the people who will consciously lead, that's when we will change the way business works - from the inside.
This interactive workshop will make you a player that's Shifting The Game.
You will: See why you do what you doIdentify and drop your defensesRe-pattern your limiting beliefsLearn how to lead a revolution and win

Breaking Through Research Orthodoxy: How Startups Can Access Greater Insights
Limited Capacity filling up

The goal of this session is to make research accessible, impactful and useful — giving teams of any size, and at any phase, practical ways to employ consumer research to inform decisions big and small. Join experts across the research spectrum that have used both scrappy research “hacks” and Fortune 100 research budgets to reveal piercing insights across a range of industries and product areas. .

We’ll show how research can give way to better decisions at every level and positively impact the work at various points of development. Finally, the case will be made for research as a journey, not a final destination -- showing how to make research happen all the time, apply learnings and keep moving forward.

Each panelist will give a 3-minute overview of their work, ideally citing a specific research effort that is relatable for a startup audience. Each panelist to submit 2 questions each that Katie will lead us through + discussion. Pepper in questions from the audience or save to last 10 min?
